Best/Worst Blog Post – Undertale, the Best Game

Slide 1: Hi, I’m Alana Luu, and this is my presentation on why Undertale is the best game.

Slide 2: What would be a problem with Undertale? Well, you may have heard of its infamous toxic fanbase. As seen in the left image, even Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, recognizes that his fanbase is quite strange.

Slide 3: Please don’t let it draw you away from the game! Despite the fandom behaving otherwise, Undertale has a good message at heart.

Slide 4: Some reasons to play Undertale include a memorable cast of characters, attention to detail, and it allows you to reap the benefits or consequences of your own actions.

Slide 5: Reason #1 – Memorable Characters

Slide 6:  How are Undertale characters memorable? According to anonymous writer Agent X, characters need facets to be alive, and therefore memorable. Three examples of good characters in Undertale include Toriel, Flowey, and Sans. Toriel is a motherly character you can grow to care for. She tries to keep you safe, but she accepts that you have to make your own decisions. Flowey is the main villain. He claims to have given up on the world, but if you choose to spare him enough, he shows emotion and his true form is revealed in one ending of the game. Finally, sans seems to be the comic relief until you take one particular ending. He teaches you a lesson about the consequences of your actions.

Although the main characters leave the biggest mark, the minor characters all have personality and quirks that stuck to you long after the game as well.

Slide 7: The next reason to play is attention to detail. These visuals don’t perfectly do the details in Undertale justice, but they show how much love and care went into the game.

Slide 8: Undertale is quite a long game to play, but it’s worth the experience. In the game, you can interact with so many different elements and there are Easter eggs littered all over the game. Sometimes you have to go into the game’s coding to discover secrets.  The game was developed by Toby Fox in a span of about 32 months, and it went over its expected release date as a result. The average playthrough is 6 hours, but it can be much longer depending on your curiosity and the path you take. Finally, the soundtrack itself is 2 hours and 10 minutes long with 101 songs all composed by Toby Fox.

Slide 9: A final reason to play Undertale is that your choices have an impact on the game. There are multiple paths that you can choose that will alter your ending or change your playthrough.

Slide 10: Breaking the 4th wall is an extension of the way you choose to play through Undertale. This tool allows the game to impact you in ways other games cannot. Like Jordan Schroeder says, “(read quote)”. As you play, you will learn that some characters know what you are doing. The best examples of these characters are Flowey and Sans. If you choose options that trigger their paths, they will judge you accordingly.  The chills you feel down your spine make the game enthralling and remarkable.

Slide 10: Here are some credits to Undertale. On the original Kickstarter, Toby Fox was able to get 10x his request of $5000 based on just a sneak peek of the game.

Slide 11: Undertale has been nominated for many awards, including the SXSW most fulfilling crowdfunded game in 2016 and IGF’s audience award winner in 2016. It made a big impact on the gaming community when it came out. There were many YouTubers playing the game, including Markiplier and Jacksepticeye.

Slide 13: Now you might ask- Why spend about 6 hours playing Undertale when there are other games to play?

Slide 14: Well, those 6+ hours go into developing the characters and the story line so that you grow attached to the world and that it leaves an impression on you! It is always worth playing a game that teaches you real life lessons and is fun as well.

Slide 15: Thank you for listening to my presentation! I hope I’ve convinced you to play Undertale.

  1. I absolutely adore the music in this game, and its piano books have the coolest art. Couldn’t find a link for it, but it’s just little water colors. I’ll definitely play this game this summer.
