Growth is Good

Growth happens at a different rate for everyone, but I’m sure you already know that. What you may not know or realize and think about is what growth looks like. There is no one way of measuring growth. This correlates to the way people learn. Everyone learns at different paces and it is hard to measure knowledge outside of school tests. After reading Siddhartha it has opened my eyes in a sense of I have a better understanding of the way people grow and learn.

This mind map shows the different aspects of a fixed mindset (left) versus a growth mindset (right).

Throughout quarantine and reading the novel, I have developed a better understanding of how different each person I encounter may be. The way people learn is always different and the speed at which they grow is always going to be different. With that being said, I think the school system, at least here, isn’t the best at accommodating each student’s needs. While I understand that there isn’t necessarily a way to ensure everyone is able to learn to the very best of their abilities, I feel that there may be a better way to accomplish just that. Now I’m not exactly ready to change the education system, I personally feel as though school’s can change in order to better accommodate students or rather give students more resources to utilize if they need it.

I feel as though with the expectations and social ideologies that are placed upon our students, we have to be able to arrange classes to best fit the different learning processes in order for students to succeed in their education. Some students struggle with their education solely because they aren’t always able to learn the way that their teacher or professor may teach and run their class. If we as a society and system are able to change the way classes are run, more students may be able to accel in their learning. Whether this be through giving students the opportunity to choose their teachers knowing that specific teacher’s teaching style or another way of giving students more options as to how they learn, I believe there are many ways we can best support students.

If we work as one to change the way we teach, we can all grow and learn together.

  1. I love the way you were able to learn something from reading Siddhartha! It is true, everyone is different and needs different things, especially when it comes to how one grows both physically and mentally. In addition, when you stated, “I feel as though with the expectations and social ideologies that are placed upon our students, we have to be able to arrange classes to best fit the different learning processes in order for students to succeed in their education,” I completely agreed with you, as everyone has different needs that they need in order to help them to succeed.

  2. Your post really resonated with me because I made a similar post on this website a couple months ago and have thought about this “problem” so many times. I completely agree that the school system, right now, is not the best at accommodating each student’s needs.

  3. I really agree with how everybody grows in different ways and at different paces! When I have a bad day or am feeling down on myself I tend to kick myself down instead of trying to pick myself up. But a bad day shouldn’t distract you from how much progress you have made. I also really like the slider on the photo. It was really cool and unique!

  4. I love the lesson you pulled from the novel and the way you interpreted it opens a wonderful new insight to the novel. In your writing you discuss the pressure that we place upon students and I feel that you have done a good job bringing light to the topic.

  5. This is what I needed to hear! I love how you expressed your take on the school system and how you’ve connected your experience in quarantine and with reading Siddhartha with an overarching issue. I sympathize with your argument that school isn’t an efficient means of allowing everyone to learn and be the best they can. I too share the hope that the might change for the better of all students. Thank you for writing this!

  6. This is a very good take on growth! I liked this topic and how you explained growth, as growth isn’t something linear that’s to be measured by other people. I think more people need to understand that whatever rate their going at is good enough and they don’t have to push themselves past the point of exhaustion to catch up. It’s true that so many students struggle to learn in a school environment, especially when the ideals of other people are pushed onto them, even when it might not be what they needed. I totally agree schools need to change the way they teach.
