Everyone right now is at least a little unsure about something.
With the countless protests for either good or bad reasons, being in quarantine for almost a year now and a million other awful things happening, I think we’re all unsure about what’s going to happen next, especially the younger generations whose life is currently composed of hours of staring at computer screens and voices crackling through calls.
The future isn’t as clear cut as some of us want it to be.
Instead of something bright ahead to look forward to, we’re all wading in this pool of uncertainty and questions, shaking our Magic-8 balls in the hopes that something good pops up in the dingy little screen.
Is everything going to be okay? Will everything go back to normal eventually? Are things going to change after this?
And honestly that’s terrifying.
It’s terrifying not knowing.
But at the same time, in this landscape of monotone events, we need to acknowledge that maybe not knowing is fine. That everything in life was never meant to be exact to begin with.
There’s always the streaks of gray that blend in graciously with the bold and certain blacks and whites of our decisions.
And while we all love to feel confident in something, it’s okay to wander in the grays of the world and our lives. Because while being in the gray is scary, the gray gives us something that the contrasting colors don’t.
Flexibility.
The ability to move around a little, to weave through the countless possibilities that being unsure gives us. Certainty brings us restraints, a list of set rules to follow while the only thing uncertainty brings is more questions.
So maybe we should rethink everything happening right now, because as constricting as things seem right now, there’s some wiggle room at least. Nothing is set in stone.
I totally agree! This past year has been crazy for everyone but it is interesting on your take of this. Most people would just see black or white and nothing in between. It is good to know that in times like these we can all be flexible, whether we might realize it or not. 2020 was such a crazy year and honestly, I am still shocked everyday.

Very impressed with this writing! It’s great how you based this off of current day conditions and I do agree with you. Nothing is set in stone and it is scary. With the world being so unsure of itself and all of us are experiencing a new, world-wide pandemic, maybe we all should try something else new, too… Coming to the realization that our lives are never certain. We need to face the true reality of our lives instead of trying to fight it off. I loved your comparison to struggles in our lives to the shades of gray and I think it was a very clever resemblance. The “gray” shows the uncertainty in life, but, as you said, we each need to rethink and overcome this so we can all move forward as people.

The artistic connections that you make your post accentuates your skills in writing masterfully! I agree that a degree of uncertainty in life is what makes it nerve wracking to think about the future. Since we can never truly predict what lies ahead of us, we must be flexible. I believe the river in Siddhartha represents our mysterious life ahead, and that Siddhartha became truly enlightened when he accepted the fact that he must truly embrace all that this existence has to offer. I would like to end my comment with a final question: Do you think that anyone can truly embrace the plane of gray that we live in, or do you think that we can’t because of how uncertain life is?
