The past few months, ever since the school closure in February, it’s been interesting to witness my own lifestyle change, in more ways than one. In such an environment, many students, including myself, would find it hard to absorb as much information and knowledge in a subject at the same rate as they would, learning from school. It’s also predictable for the school to change its policy in the coming fall, when school resumes in late August, so the unanswered question remains to be, “what will the new policy be”? Truthfully, if the same policy as now(which is pretty much just students and teachers do whatever they want), were to apply next fall, I don’t think I would be able to handle the stress of learning from home, which would significantly lower my concentration and speed of learning.
From past experience, I found out that posting lessons is “not” the way to go. Currently I am in Spanish 1, and lessons are being posted daily. From the lack of participation that can be seen on the weekly discussions, it is certain that many students fail to gather up the motivation or feel the necessity to complete the assignment. Teachers would also have a hard time, as students would email them separately at different times, due to the fact that they are not able to ask questions during school. In conclusion, would it not be better to simply restart schools like before, allowing those that wish to return to school return and those that wish to stay home to abstain?
On another note, I personally believe that it’s ludicrous to even attempt to proceed with the current policies, with all that is happening in society. The government has attempted to completely eradicate the virus in the span of two weeks, a few months back, but some citizens(not the essential workers) irresponsibly continued to associate themselves into large groups, as if to help spread the virus. Unable to contain the virus in those two weeks, the virus is still out there in large numbers, and the beach protests along with the George Floyd protests are expected to raise the death toll, which can be seen from the increment of 20,000 coronavirus cases just from Sunday(according to CNN), around last week, said to be caused by the massive rise in protests. With the quarantine a few months in, I believe that the effect which restricted the people’s movement outside the house is starting to wear off, which gives me the impression that it may be too late to stop the coronavirus from transmitting. There really isn’t a point in online learning, if society itself isn’t willing to contain the virus. Therefore, would it not be the most logical step to simply open the schools?
