This is joy, this is summer

I´m more than certain that to all of us, students, teachers, and school staffs alike, distancing learning, communication, and work online. Everyone one of us has been affected and probably not in a positive light. To me, school, to an extent, wasn´t that enjoyable, but I found it to be more suitable and entertaining than online school.

On campus, I can see my friends, in and out of classes, and get the opportunity to converse and joke around with them. I also see my teachers in person and learn the lesson being taught directly face to face, allowing me to ask them questions or for clarification if I happened to not understand or am not sure of something. They can explain it right away and even provide many useful examples and demonstrations; not only that, I get an answer and a confirmation right away.

Sending emails make me less nervous because there is no actual discussion about the issue and face to face talking, but the receiver might be busy doing something else and can take hours, maybe even days to respond. It´s obviously not their fault but sometimes, you want or just need an explanation or comment right away, thus it could be frustrating.

The subject of actual online school, however, is different to me. I definitely do not despise it but I´m not a fan of it, at times. I do like the fact that we can take things at our own pace and the learning/assignment schedule is much more fluid and flexible. I also appreciate the teachers making an effort to extend the tests and quizzes taking time. For example, my Spanish teacher give us 2 days time to complete an exam and he tells about it a week beforehand; this is important because not everyone have the same agenda, some might be busier than others, and most of us just like to plan ahead. When social distancing started and we stopped school, I genuinely thought teachers were going to bombard us with loads and loads of online worksheets, essays, tests, quizzes; but I have less work at home than I did at school.

I don´t like taking online tests and quizzes. Some of the questions asked can be confusing and I can´t ask for clarifications or explanations right away which force me to just give up and pick the best possible answer for the very puzzling questions. Equally, a few answers are either difficult to understand or just does not make sense whatsoever. I don´t like the process of doing a worksheet on paper, by hand then using a Doc scanner app to transform it into a PDF file. It´s not a big deal but when you have 7 math homework assignments to solve, complete, and turn into a digital file, it can get a bit repetitive and annoying.

If we still have (complete) online school next year, I want the no-failing policy enforced on our grades. How can we fail a class that we never physically attended but still did all the online works for it; personally, I just think it´s unfair and wrong if we receive a failing grade despite trying our best and doing every assignments, taking every tests and quizzes. Another thing would be no work would be done or due on the weekends. Weekends are for sleeping and relaxing, not for taking a chemistry quiz or completely a Spanish worksheet.

While doing my online works, I´ve been listening to many different songs and albums from a variety of artists. Here are my top 3 favourites.

  1. I never thought about all the times in class when students are taking a test or quiz and they raise their hand and ask for clarification. It happens all the time, but it’s impossible to do when taking a test online. That’s a great point.
