My life in quarantine has become monotonous. Everyday seems like a repeat of the past, with someone copy and pasting yesterday. Since quarantine, my sleep schedule has been totally messed up, sleeping anywhere from 12 – 3 am. It’s not just my sleep schedule that has changed however. My whole schedule and routine has changed. Nevertheless, the one thing that hasn’t changed is food. Because I am sleeping at such late times, I tend to wake up late, usually at 9 or 10 am. By this time my family is already up, meaning that breakfast has already been made, or it is already finished.

Unlike many other people, I lack the basic skills of cooking. This is the reason why I have resorted to cereal and milk in the morning or microwaved soup dumplings. Not only does this allow me to conserve my energy, it also gives me more time to do other things like homework. Although I know that quarantine is giving me the time to try to cook, I don’t have the skills or the effort to try to learn to cook. However, I do try to help in the kitchen, peeling and cutting vegetables. My family’s eating habits haven’t really been affected. Before quarantine we were cooking at home most of the time.
Friday nights have been affected however. Usually opting to eat outside, we no longer have the luxury of going to a restaurant or going to a restaurant at 9 pm knowing that they are open. Now we get takeouts from restaurants or try to cook something similar to the restaurant. Personally, I have mixed feelings about staying in too eat. Part of me loves eating in solitude, but another peace of me misses being amongst strangers and hearing the chatters throughout the restaurant.
My meals that I eat are often lonely, eating by myself while finishing homework. My meals often feel the same as if I was still going to school. Surprisingly, I haven’t kicked into my cravings. I wasn’t really a junk food person nor did I have cravings for them to begin with. I have however found myself liking fruits and vegetables a lot more. Nevertheless, I hope the quarantine is over so that my meals become more lively.
Okay. You are going to start small. Here are your challenges.
1. Breakfast: you are going to learn how to cook an egg and make toast. You can try frying an egg, if the yolk breaks it’s okay or you can scramble the egg. If you need help I can make a video. If you can make eggs and toast and coffee people will love you in the morning and you’ll feel competent.
2. Lunch. Learn how to make a simple grilled cheese. If you can do this people will be impressed and happy and you will be happy too.
3. Dinner. Either a quesadilla or spaghetti with red sauce. Even if you just used a jar of red sauce that’s okay. The spaghetti will impress people and once you can make that, you can branch into different pastas and sauces. If you can make eggs and a quesadilla you can make a breakfast quesadilla and that’s super tasty.
My wife can make oatmeal, green smoothies, toast with feta cheese, a simple pasta and a simple veggie soup. That’s enough to keep her healthy and happy. You don’t need to know how to make a billion things. My son started with grilled cheese, eggs, and quesadillas and once he cooked those for months, he started experimenting and felt more confident.
