Humans at birth are born into the world without an ounce of idea of what they are or what they should do. Then soon after, through their parents, they learn countless things and gain knowledge about their environment, and how to live. In only a couple years, a human can go from a baby who have no idea how to even move, to learning the basics of a language from nothing. Everything we learn in our first years is from our surroundings. So what if we aren’t taught something?
In my opinion, one of the biggest things a person should learn in their life is to not repeat the same mistakes over and over. From something completely avoidable such as forgetting keys, to leaving the stove on, we do small forgetful actions like these all the time. However when it comes to larger, more memorable issues, we rarely repeat our fatal mistakes. The reason is due to our knowledge accumulating and actively working against the actions which brought us to the large issue. This is why I believe all of history should be covered, especially if the country who publishes the history was in the wrong.
“History is written by the victors” This is a phrase which is debated about online as many people attempt to contradict it saying the victors would have trouble censoring everything. However if you think about it from the perspective of the one losing, you get another insight. As the party taking a loss, would you want to publicize a loss to the world? Could you withstand the backlash of your people for generations to come? Or worse, if the conflict was between the government and it’s people without a clear victor. Who would write about the conflict? If no one is to write about it, then how can we learn as a society about how to avoid it?
This is why clear, concise knowledge is needed within history. With the knowledge open and available, all societies can learn from the past of the different reactions that can occur. We as humans can avoid the issues our ancestors have gone through while paving a path for the best future.
