Evil among Us

All humans have the capacity to be good. But why do so many choose to be filled with hate? They Called Us Enemy is a graphic novel by activist George Takei chronicling his experience living in Japanese internment camps as a child during World War II. While he takes us on a ride through his thought process and interactions in this comic, I noticed it related to many of our modern day problems. This novel shines light onto hate through race and skin color, but has led me to think why we simply hate in general. Why do we despise, murder, discriminate and more? Why can’t we love, share, and acknowledge one another?

I personally believe us humans are born good by nature. So why are there crimes, racism, war still happening you say. It all crumbles down to what were we taught, our environment, and circumstances. We were all made this way. Look at yourself in the mirror. All the hardships, struggles, accomplishments builds your character from the mind to the soul. But it is how you respond to these things that make you who you are.

This may be very baffling, but I believe racism and other hate can bring us together more than it separates us. We as the young community are the change. We must teach our children right from wrong with love.

This teacher, who we will call, Mr.T, is the teacher we never knew we needed. He constantly shows compassion and even though he receives intolerance, his kindness still shines. He taught us life lessons and made us do assignments that made us think very differently about the world and each other. As an adult and a mentor, he takes his opportunity not to just teach English, but to teach about life. Our world will never change until we become like Mr.T. We have to continue to teach our children as their minds continue to keep growing and exploring.

“Nevertheless, while no one maintains that good and evil are not contraries, they can not only coexist, but the evil cannot exist at all without the good, or in a thing that is not a good. On the other hand, the good can exist without evil.”

I myself can’t personally decode much of this quote, but it is something that keeps me wondering and thinking a lot about.
