When reading The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I’ve noticed many of the connections to real world life. Like said, for the money or love? Daisy being one of the characters mainly stood out to me being to highlight for me because of the way she relates to modern day. Although she loves Tom, Gatsby had her heart for some time with the money and luxuries he owned. But even if Daisy stood out to me, Gatsby was center of attention. In order to reach Daisy’s heart he figured being rich and having money would lead her right to him. This process was known as materialism connecting to the real world because of the material girls and others known of going by today. Even if money did shine for Daisy, she still chose love, and for Gatsby we’ll have to find out!
In modern day society, everyone is all about brands and being able to show off what they have in order to impress people or even to brag. Gatsby wanted to impress Daisy by using money showing her the riches that could be hers if she decides to be with him. And back to the question was this for the money or love? A lot of women in the world use their husbands for the money and not really love them, some women want the easier path in life being able to not work and be spoiled, but was this the case for Daisy? Being with Gatsby could make her life easier but we know by the end she still chose Tom. I feel like this can connect to social media because of what people are posting like the bigger-expensive things they own. Although even these things would be hard to afford people like high schoolers would buy these products to match up with everyone to fit in and be popular, maybe even to impress a crush! Without buying what everyone else had, bullying tends to occur. Maybe Daisy didn’t want to live a hard life being with someone who wasn’t making the exact amount she wanted but would she really leave for the money like that? I think that even in society today if we were to meet the right people, anyone would choose love over money. In the end she realized that money wasn’t everything even if Gatsby tried to convince her that she never loved Tom. Another connection I can make is in the song “Material Girl,” by Madonna. In her lyrics she says, “Cause the boy with the hard cash is always Mister Right.” This is referring to how a lot of women will go to men with money over personality in order to live the expensive life connecting to Daisy for going to Gatsby at the time.

So was the answer money or love? It’s clear that although money was showing materialism in the real world, most people would choose love over money any day. From our main example Daisy, we know that even if Gatsby did have all the money and was center of attention that could catch any women, Daisy still chose love. This shows what society is during this day because of how tempting a luxurious and rich life can be easy for a person. While Gatsby and Daisy shows what relationships can be based off of with money, Tom and Daisy represents the love.
