My name is Max Smith, and I’m explaining why rainy days should not be hated as much as they are. Starting off with a few examples of negative rainy day memes; these can be pretty funny, I’m not going to lie, but they spread the false message that rain is bad.
This photo for instance, says that rainy days are boring, which they are NOT.
Here are some of the benefits of rainy days. These are reasons why they aren’t as bad as some people may think. You can relax indoors, see rainbows outside, and go do things in the rain.
Starting with benefit #1: relaxing indoors. If you’re not up to going outside, you can spend the day indoors having friends over or just enjoying some alone time. Everyone needs a mental break once in a while, and rainy days are the perfect time for that. Listening to rain is meditative and it can help you concentrate, or sleep. When having friends over, you could do activities such as watch movies, bake, or even play a few board games. I know is sounds a little cliche, “board games on a rainy day”, but they’re a great way to strengthen bonds. Board games are also great for reducing stress and just having fun (unless someone is stealing from the monopoly bank when no one is looking). In relation to what’s going on right now, with everyone stuck inside all day, it’s good whenever there is a change in scenery. Looking out the window and seeing rain instead of the same plain sunny day can be a reminder that not everyday is the same, even though they may feel very very repetitive.
Alright, moving onto benefit #2: rainbows. Rainbows are a sign of happiness, with their bright colors. It’s proven that brighter colors can affect your mood in a positive way. For example, the color yellow is associated with happiness. Rainbows are also pretty rare, as it doesn’t rain as often as there is sunshine. When something is rare, it holds more of a value than things the are seen everyday. If you still don’t have a positive opinion of rainy days, then maybe you’ll at least be able to appreciate a product of them, rainbows. (they also indicate the arrival of sunshine, meaning the rain is coming to an end).
Now some of you may ask, “why would something happy, such a rainbows, be produced by something that has always been associated with sadness (rainy days)? Well usually, good things tend to come from bad experiences. In my opinion, rainy days are not bad things, bit to others they may be. Studying is a good example for this. It may be boring and not enjoyable sometimes, but from what comes out of it is a good grade, hopefully.
The third benefit of a rainy day, is the opportunity to play and exercise in the rain. Your physical and motor skills are needed more when outside in the rain due to slippery conditions, wind, water weight, etc. Rainy conditions can also increase creativity. Also, who doesn’t like a quick refresher? Walking outside and smelling the freshly watered plants.
Elaborating on what was said above, how and why does rain boost creativity? As discussed earlier, a change of scenery is good because it can stimulate the brain to think differently in regard to the environment. It’s somewhat like a wake up call, in which your brain notices the differences from normal, everyday life. Now, how does rain stimulate the brain? Don’t a lot of people use rain ambiance sounds to fall asleep? Yes, rain can both stimulate and relax the brain. For example, some people may be able to focus on their schoolwork better, while others may feel more encouraged to go for a run outside. While running, rain creates a distraction so that you don’t think about the physical exertion as much as you would on a normal day. As for homework, the background noise, or ambient sound of rain hitting surfaces, actually can help cut out distractions and help tune into an activity easier. It relaxes the brain, taking away unnecessary stimulation, allowing you to put thought into one thing at a time if that’s what you’d like to do.
In conclusion, rainy days aren’t as bad as you may think they are. They have a lot of benefits mentally, emotionally, and physically. Next time it rains, whenever that may be, try to break out of normality and embrace rainy days as happy things rather than sad things. Thanks for reading!
