Some have given the opinion that YouTube’s streaming service is superior to Twitch, and although, YouTube is a good platform..
Is it the best?
Although YouTube may have a streaming platform, that’s not what they’re generally known for. They’re known for edited videos and clips. But Twitch is one of the original streaming platforms which shows us that they are clearly superior.
How is Twitch the best? My three claims are connection, popularity, and variety. Twitch is good for connection because you can donate and talk to streamers live and have them respond in real-time. Popularity also benefits Twitch since many people that use Twitch support each other, which gives this platform a big and supportive community. Variety would be beneficial because of the many different types of streams to choose from, which I’ll elaborate on later.
Twitch is designed to be a platform for content, including Esport tournaments, personal streams of individual players, and gaming related talk shows. Many streamers that we watch play with others as well. Team oriented games that can be streamed alone or with friends. Offline TV and other groups play games such as Among Us, Valorant, Minecraft, and League together, as well as alone.
Why would using Twitch benefit its viewers? During our pandemic, we can’t go out and enjoy the world as we could before and we may need a way to distract ourselves. A solution to this would be using Twitch. Watching streams and talking to streamers could help you feel less lonely. You form connections to these people and start to get to know them personally. This is one of the main reasons why Twitch is blown up over quarantine. Twitch has had more than 100,000,000 viewers per month as of 2020 and remained the leading live streaming video service for video games in the US and had an advantage over YouTube Gaming. As of February 2020, it had three million broadcasters monthly and 15 million daily active users and 1.4 average concurrent users.
Why is Twitch so popular? The popularity of Twitch eclipsed that of its general interest counterpart. The majority of Twitch users are gamers who host and share Esport events and challenges on the platform.
Now moving onto the variety portion of Twitch. Twitch launched a second non-gaming category called “Creative” which is intended for streams showcasing the creation of artistic and creative works. We all know Twitch is widely known for their platform of gaming, but they live stream vlogs, mukbangs, and watch parties. One of my favorite sections is their music genre. Artists edit their music live as well as perform, which I found is pretty cool. They edit their music live before releasing and they’re not afraid to take criticism from the viewers.
Why does variety benefit this platform? Would you rather be stuck listening to country music or have different options? Exactly. You would get sick of country after a couple hours and the same concept applies to twitch as well. Many different genres means many different options that cater to your needs.
“There are too many unskippable ads.” Yes there are ads on the stream but you know that the money is going towards the streamers that you’re supporting and this and some streamers even host donation streams where they take a certain percentage of revenue and donate it to charity. You can also pay so you wouldn’t get ads anymore.
Everyone goes to twitch for watching gameplay and a variety of other streams, and it’s because they’re smart. You would want to go to the original platform that pretty much started off the live streaming community. Twitch is one of the best streaming platforms because of connection, popularity, and variety.
