Chapter 9: The Ferryman
Insight: Enjoy it while it lasts.
Quote: “For a long time, he sat and looked at her peacefully dead face. For a long time, he observed her mouth, her old, tired mouth, with those lips, which had become thin, and he remembered, that he used to, in the spring of his years, compare this mouth with a freshly cracked fig.”
Some people don’t know a good thing when they have it. People tend to be less appreciative of things until they lose it. In this chapter, Siddhartha witnessed the death of Kamala. Once she passed, he started reminiscing and remembering moments he had with her. When you lose something or someone that you made memories with, all you can do is look back on what used to be. You have forever to remember back to those moments but the amount of time given to make those memories is limited. Enjoy the time you have with someone before it’s gone.
Art Representation:
One of the things I feel like I’m going to take for granted in the future would be my parents. I always think about how everyone says if your parents offered you to sleep in their bed, you should take it because you’ll regret the times you haven’t. You should cherish every moment that they’re here but i don’t think you shouldn’t be thinking about the times when they might leave. You should start enjoying the memories you’re making or you’ll be left with nothing. The thought of losing someone may be sad, but the thought of how you wasted the time with them could be even worse. This chapter in Siddhartha really taught me that you have forever to reminisce about the memories but times are limited when it comes to making them. Take advantage of the time you have.
