Societal Jail

Most of us are trying to impress the wrong people. Most of us are wasting our time with things we don’t really love. And all of us are stuck in this vicious society we have been breeding for the last couple of years. On social media, we put on fake smiles for likes and comments. But in reality, the ones with the biggest smiles are the ones hurting the most. Our future is already planned by our parents with their own visions of success, when it doesn’t line up with our own plan. So we accept it, living in complete misery until our time is up on this Earth.

At school, we put on a fake mask of happiness so we seem perfect and that everything is okay. At home, we pretend to be fine and act like nothing is going on. But the longer we suppress our emotions, the more damaging it will be when these feelings become too much. Society has gone too far off the scales where everything is judged. We don’t like being out casted so we conform to the social standard. But it is this process that is killing so many of us, just not physically.

“Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75.” – Benjamin Franklin

When we become adults, we lose our drive to live and our aspirations we had in our youth. We forget about our grand plans of chasing our true dreams, and start to live like zombies. We slave away at work, stressed about paying our bills on time. That dream of becoming a famous writer or actor sounds as good as an absolute joke. We are pressured by society to look wealthy and happy. We are no different than the dead, we just aren’t buried yet.

Everywhere you go, you can see that everyone is chained to their phones. We have become too dependent on these short bursts of excitement we get from a text, email, like, or comment. We have this constant fear of missing out, so we waste countless hours on our phone. But social media is nothing more than a fabricated reality, a reality that creates false comparisons, jealousy, and hate.

Especially during our teenager years, we are the most vulnerable to the destructive qualities of our society. Everyone is going through their own battles and some figure it out while some don’t. But you should know to never sell yourself short. Because everyone, and I mean everyone, is unique and possesses a potential that they don’t even know they had. You deserve your own happiness…

  1. First off, I would like to say that the picture you chose was EXCELLENT. However, something I really wanted to mention that I thought was so cool was how you used photos, quotes, and a video woven throughout the post. So many times I see a writer tackle a popular topic and analyze it further (myself included), because we think that it is more genuine or for some other reason, but the truth is through the years of writing on this Earth, someone has already said it. At least once. By doing what you did, providing a source, and simply building off it with your thoughts, your reflections, you created something more unique than had you simply paraphrased the TED talk. I also thought that the ability to have so many points that made sense when connected was just a great plan of writing beforehand, so really great job.
