What will my future look like?

Considering all of the controversy going around about whether or not students should continue online learning or return to campus with restrictions (social distancing, wearing masks, smaller classes, etc.), I often wonder, how much change will there be in the future and who decides what’s best for us?

Given the circumstances, it is especially difficult for students to prioritize and focus on our schooling amidst a global pandemic. We are worried and afraid of the unknown. The safety and health of our family members and ourselves cause many worries. By continuing to learn at home, we can help flatten the curve and we wouldn’t have to constantly worry about our safety and the safety of others. This option has the least amount of risk and ensures that the students who want to learn will do so and can do it anxiety-free.

Some families may not even have the luxury of taking this time off to relax and enjoy themselves. Which is why online schooling would be beneficial for many families (like mine) that have parents who work several days a week/hours a day just to support their family’s needs. Ever since the quarantine was set in place, my single-mom has been working two jobs at once. This leaves me home alone practically all the time so it’s important for me to be the one who takes care of the household when they can’t. So at a time like this, I’m very blessed to learn flexibly and practically.

I’ve also been able to take care of myself more. My anxiety has improved immensely and I no longer have trouble falling asleep. For once, I have time to incorporate some physical activity in my day. Never thought I would say this but I like running! I’m finally able to manage the things I can control like my well-being, state-of-mind, and mood. Overall, my mental health has benefited from the flexible learning schedules and fewer time constraints.
