Adjusting to Distance Learning

Online learning was an adjustment that every student had to make in order to continue the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. This transition was not as easy as it may sound, completely transforming daily life into an online format is very challenging. For me, I found it difficult to learn everything in an online format, learning from online video lectures didn’t work as a way for me to learn new concepts. Distance learning was a large transition for me and many other people, it was a completely new situation that no one had ever experienced before. Prior to distance learning, I never realized how much I enjoyed being in a classroom learning with other classmates. The hardest part about distance learning, for me, has been doing everything on my own. Although distance learning hasn’t been ideal, I have learned ways on how to get used to online learning and doing things on my own.

One of the things that I found worked best for me with distance learning was spreading out all my work so that I would have time to do everything. Many of my teachers assigned work at the same time so it became too much for me to handle all at once. I found that the best strategy to fix the problem was spreading out all my work and ensuring that I had time to get everything done. Distance learning was a big adjustment for me, but over time I was able to get used to it. Spending time doing my work allowed me to figure out what worked best for me and I was able to adjust to this new lifestyle. Although I miss regular class and all the classmates I got to spend time with, I have adjusted my life to online classes.

One of the things I found that didn’t work out for me during distance learning was trying to learn from video lectures. Although this was the main way of learning new concepts, it was difficult for me to adjust to learning fully through online videos. It was hard to adjust to online learning because most of the time I had to self teach myself all the new concepts. The pandemic changed the lives of everyone and we all had to learn how to adjust to a very different way of life. The time of crisis caused panic among many people, many of those were students who now had to transition into having a lot of work that was to be completed online. I am glad to see that summer is fast approaching and students will soon have a break from all the work in order to relax and do some good for themselves.

In the fall of 2020, I would like to see many changes occur if the situation regarding the pandemic improves. I have found that completely transforming learning to an online format hasn’t been very successful and I would like to see changes put in place. For the fall of 2020, I would like to see a system put in place where half of the student’s learning is in person and the other half is online. This would help reduce the spread of the virus along with precautionary measures taken to ensure public safety. This way would ensure that students have the ability to learn in person from their teachers and ask questions if they have any. I would also agree with having only one-fourth of the class in person to further reduce the risk of spreading the virus. I would not want to continue a completely online-based education system because I find that I don’t learn as much as I could and I feel that it isn’t the best thing for students. I will agree with what teachers and administrators view fit, but I do have my opinions about what I find is the best way to learn. A statement made my one of my classmates is one that I strongly agree with, “I don’t particularly care what teachers do, I trust that they’ll do what they think is best, but I personally would like if teachers would spend a little bit of time talking about the previous and/or upcoming week with their students, either for review, answering questions, or simply to ask how the week was” (Imane Jlelati). I agree with her idea of having teachers give their students more information about how the class will be scheduled in order to make their students more prepared. If teachers don’t agree with this idea, I support however they choose to run their class but I think it would be more beneficial for students. Distance learning has been a difficult transition for all of the people involved, with some changes made I think it can be greatly improved. Changes made will help support the students and teachers involved, everyone deserves to be given the tools to be successful and the changes made will help provide success.
